A lift car hangs from strong steel cables. The cables run over a big wheel at the top of the building, turned by an electric motor.

On the other end of the cables hangs a counterweight. When the car goes up, the counterweight goes down, so the motor only has to lift the difference, a bit like a seesaw. Brakes hold the car still at each floor. Next time you ride a lift, count the floors and listen for the motor.
